Open Volunteer Positions

 

Library Volunteers

The Erving Public Library is actively seeking volunteers to support library operations and programs.  Available duties include shelving library materials including books and DVDs, shelf reading to ensure items are in proper order, pulling/selecting items as instructed by a librarian, organizing Makerspace supplies, and other assorted tasks.  Volunteers will need to be at least fourteen (14) years of age with a valid ID, be able to alphabetize materials, and conduct themselves in a tidy manner.  All volunteers may be expected to interact with the public in a courteous way.  CORI checks will be performed for all new volunteers.  Volunteering will be done during library open hours: Sunday & Wednesday 10:00am-4:00pm, Monday & Tuesday 12:00pm-6:00pm, and Thursday 1:00pm-7:00pm.

Cultural Council

Cultural Council members are appointed. The local Cultural Council supports public programs that promote access, education, diversity and excellence in the arts, humanities, and interpretive sciences in communities across the Commonwealth. Local decision-making is an integral element of this system. Local councils have the right and responsibility to award grants that address cultural needs specific to their communities, and they can decide how to distribute funds if the state policies outlined in these regulations and supplementary guidelines are followed. They meet 2-4 times per year.

Golden Cane Committee

Golden Cane Committee members are appointed and is charged with researching, in collaboration with the Town Clerk and vital records information, to find the eldest living Town resident and presents that individual(s) with a Golden Cane Certificate.  The committee is currently down to one member and this tradition cannot carry forth without having three (3) members.

Cable Advisory Committee

Cable Advisory Committee members are appointed and the committee is charged to:  1)assess local cable needs, 2)monitor company compliance with the contract, 3)solicit and review proposals from cable companies, 4)negotiate contracts with cable providers in the best interest of the community in terms of programming, cost to consumer, and amenities provided to the municipality and schools, 5)make recommendations to the licensing authority (the Select Board) regarding contract terms, and 6)obtain community input in fulfillment of "Municipal Ascertainment" guidelines of the Massachusetts Cable Television Division.

Planning Board Alternate

Planning Board Members are elected, but the alternate is an appointed position. The Planning Board is charged with overseeing and guiding development in the community. The Planning Board reviews permit applications for subdivisions and some special permits, and it is designated as the authority for Site Plan Review permits. 

Conservation Commission

Conservation Commissioners are appointed and are the official agency specifically charged with the protection of a community's natural resources. The commission also advises other municipal officials and boards on conservation issues that relate to their areas of responsibility.

Council on Aging

Councils on Aging & Senior Centers provide support services to elders, families and caregivers in the community. As a local agency, the Councils on Aging & Senior Centers serve as an elder advocate, offers services, and activities for elders. Council on Aging offerings may include: Outreach, Transportation, Meals (congregate or home delivered), Health screenings, Health insurance counseling, Socialization, Fitness, wellness and recreation activities, Life-long learning. They serve as a link to and support for elders. Each Council on Aging determines its own priorities based on local needs and resources. Senior centers are a welcoming place for older adults who wish to remain independent in their community.

Gill-Montague Regional School District Representative (2 vacancies)

Gill-Montague Representatives are appointed by the Town Moderator and are charged with attending Gill-Montague Reg. School District meetings and advocating for parents and students in the district.  The representative also reports information from these meetings to the School Committee. Representatives are non-voting members.

Open Elected Positions

 

The Town of Erving would like to announce three (3) vacancies on the Recreation Commission, one (1) vacancy on the Planning Board, one (1) vacancy on the Board of Assessors, and one (1) vacancy on the School Committee.  These vacancies are for elected positions. In accordance with MGL Chapter 41, Section 11, the Select Board is seeking interested residents to serve in these positions until the Annual Town Election in 2023.  To be considered, an interested person must be a registered voter of the Town of Erving.

The Planning Board is a five (5) member elected Board that guides the development of Erving by serving as the Special Permit and site plan review authority under the Zoning Bylaw.  The Board also administers the provisions of the Subdivision Control regulations.  The Planning Board plays an important role in reviewing the Zoning Bylaw, proposing edits, and holding public hearings for voters before any revisions are presented at Town Meeting.

The Recreation Commission is a five (5) member elected Board that provides youth sports, recreational programs, and special events for Erving residents.  The Commission does so while overseeing the use and development of the Town’s five (5) parks and playgrounds.

The Board of Assessors is a three (3) member elected Board that supervises the work performed by the Principal Assessor.  This position approves and oversees the tax rate setting process as well as approval of exemptions, abatements, motor vehicle excise and valuation of real and personal property in the Town of Erving. There is a requirement to meet at least once a month for a 60 to 90-minute meeting.

The School Committee is a five (5) member elected Board that establishes educational goals and policies for Erving Elementary School consistent with the requirements of the law.  Each member is expected to attend all meetings (3rd Tuesday of every month) and participate in subcommittees.  Members are also encouraged to attend the Union 28 District quarterly meetings.  It is highly recommended that the Superintendent’s Evaluation be completed by each member.
