A Statement From the Town Moderator Regarding a Comment Made at Annual Town Meeting

To the Town of Erving Selectboard and Officials, Residents of the Town of Erving, grieving families and friends’, First Responders, and others affected by The French King Bridge’s history of tragedies. I am sorry. I sincerely apologize for my remark at the end of the May 11, 2022, Annual Town Meeting, preceding an update on the French King Bridge safety upgrades project. It was offensive, inappropriate, insensitive, hurtful, it does not reflect who I am, or the respect I have for the gravitas of the situation being remedied by the safety upgrades on the bridge.

In my trusted role as Town Moderator, I attempt to keep the mood light. I am personally embarrassed and mortified by what I said and am truly sorry. It was wrong, I know that, and own that it was wrong and hurtful. In my decades of serving the town in this role, this is a regret that I will carry for a long time. The remark does not reflect my true opinion or any official position of the Town of Erving. I humbly I ask for your forgiveness for that momentary lapse in judgement, with my respect and deepest heartfelt apologies to you all.

Sincerely,
Richard Peabody
