The Town public water supply experienced a bacterial hit during a routine water sampling process on September 6, 2023. Per protocol, the Town re-sampled on September 8, 2023, and again experienced a bacterial hit.
The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection has been notified and the Town will begin a chlorination process. Water customers may notice the taste or smell of chlorine in the water. This is normal. Once the matter is resolved the Town intends to discontinue chlorination.
There can be several contributing factors related to this bacterial hit, potentially related to the water in the upper levels of the tank being warmer, due to heat conditions experienced in the summer, than the cooler water at the bottom of the tank. This can create an environment for bacterial growth.
